SEO is a process where a website or a blog is changed through "on page" and "off page" techniques to get the site ranking higher for a particular search phrase on Google, Yahoo, and Bing/MSN. There are hundreds of factors that a Search Engine (called "SE") looks at when they decide how important a web page or a blog page is as an answer when a surfer types in a particular search phrase. That is to say that a SE is looking to provide a "relevant" answer to a surfer's question. And as you might suppose, there are a lot of different factors a SE will analyze and total to rank just how relevant a web page may or may not be for a particular phrase.
So to define SEO, I've already mentioned a number of important terms and I'll go over them right now:
SEO - Search Engine Optimization, a process to make a web page look more appealing to a search engine as an answer for a particular search phrase
SE - Search Engine, there are thousands of search engines but 98% of all searches are done on Google.com, Yahoo.com, and Bing.com (the new version of MSN.com).
On Page - changes that can be made to a web page or a blog page.
Off Page - changes that can be made that will have an impact on a target web page, but these changes are done on another site.
Search Phrase - one or more words types into the search bar of a search engine. AThese are also sometimes know as "keywords" or "keyword phrases".
Relevance - this is what search engines are looking to provide to their users... the most relevant answer to a searchers question. The more relevant a web page appears to be, the higher ranking the page will probably be.
Now that we have covered the basic terms we see that SEO is a process. I can leave you with one more note, sometimes the people that work in the field are known as SEO Specialists or just SEO's.
